Recipe Notes
You’re going to be blown away when you realize just how simple it is to make your own low carb taco seasoning!
Ingredient Notes
It’s just ground spices, you guys! This is easy as pie!
Chili powder – This can come in a few different varieties, so be aware of how spicy powder is (ask me how I know, ha!) Chipotle peppers tend to be spicier than Ancho blends. And cayenne is a whole different ingredient, so leave that for another recipe.
I recommend sticking with a mild meld (I like Trader Joe’s brand!) and adding heat later. That way you can mix and match to your taste.
Onion powder – Onion powder tends to clump. Break it up with a fork or buzz it in a spice grinder if it’s really caked.
Red pepper flakes – This blend of dried pepper flesh and seeds is gonna add the heat to your dish, so go easy on it. You can even leave this out if you have more sensitive stomachs.
Storing Tips
Store this low carb taco seasoning mix in an airtight container, like a mason jar. Keep a few dry beans in there too to absorb any excess moisture.

Recipe Variations
Need to swap out an ingredient? Want to use this on something else? Read on!
- Make it spicier. You can increase the heat on this keto taco seasoning by adding more red pepper flakes. You can also add a few shakes of cayenne if you really want to amp up the sweat factor!
- Make it milder. Same as above, but in reverse. Ha! Leave out the red pepper flakes entirely for a low carb taco seasoning that has all the flavors you love in Mexican food, with less heat.

I can’t wait to try this! How long will this store in a mason jar?
Lindsey
Hi Angela! We aren’t adding any fresh herbs to it, so it’ll last as long as any other spice. I’d say 6 months to maximize freshness? Hope you enjoy <3

Great beginnings with a lot of ad lib to it. Never go back to store bought. Used real onion and garlic. Swapped out the chili flakes for 1/2 finely diced jalapeno. Sauteed the onion garlic and jalapeno with the ground beef. Added some hot sauce to the 1/2 cup water and voila better than restaurant quality. The fresh ingredients made it so good! Added extra flavor and a heat that snick up on you but was not overpowering. Just flavor packed.

Great Idea Arpita! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ?

Your recipe is great and an excellent money saver, but not really a carb saver:
Store bought serving = 1.5 carbs in a tsp. There are 3 tsp in 1 TBSP, so 1.5 X 3 = 4.5 carbs in a TBSP
Your recipe = 2 carbs in 1/2 TBSP
Comparing apples to apples (TBSP to TBSP, ;-0) There are 4.5 carbs in store bought divide by 2 = 1/2 TBSP So 2.25 carbs in a 1/2 TBSP serving. A quarter of a carb is NOT going to ruin my KETO diet!

Hi Sheri. We like making out own for 2 reasons: almost all storebought taco seasonings contain added sugar, which doesn’t enhance flavor and I’d rather not include. And 2, homemade tastes better! Significantly better from our testing, as the seasoning ratios are different. I totally understand if making your own isn’t worth it to you, but there are many reasons to make homemade taco seasoning beyond saving a few carbs!
