Top 101 Detox Water Recipes

Water. We simply can’t live without it.

Sometimes it’s so thirst quenching-ly good! Other times? You’d rather have a soda.

Let’s face the facts… Who actually enjoys downing the recommended daily dose of plain ol’water?!

I certainly don’t. And if you agree, I’ve got an idea that’ll make drinking water much more enjoyable and far less of a chore.

It’s time to amp up your water game, by simply…

Infusing water with fruits, herbs and veggies.

It’s that easy. All you have to do is:

Place your desired flavor combo in a mason jar. Add water. Let it sit.

And Voila! Just like that, you’ve created your very own, low calorie, deliciously infused water.

Looking for extra credit? Use ingredients with detoxifying qualities (we’ll identify these below) to create a detox water!

We’ve sipped on countless combinations of detox waters, and narrowed it down to our absolute faves.

Here are a couple of water infusing tips before you get started:

  • Try these water recipes with hot water, cold water, soda water or even over ice!
  • For an extra burst of flavor, place the infused water in the fridge for a few hours before drinking it.

 

The Importance of Drinking Water


It’s a no brainer. We need to drink water.

Our bodies require a sufficient supply to function properly and remain healthy!

In fact, water is “your body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.” (source)

From bowel movements to perspiration, our bodies are constantly using up the water we drink for basic bodily functions.

According to the Mayo Clinic, you should be drinking enough so that…

“you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow — and measures about 6.3 cups (1.5 liters) or more a day if you were to keep track.” (source)

Quick word of caution: You can drink too much water.

“In rare cases, drinking an extreme amount in a short time can be dangerous. It can cause the level of salt, or sodium, in your blood to drop too low. That’s a condition called hyponatremia. It’s very serious, and can be fatal. You may hear it called water intoxication. How much would you have to drink? An enormous amount. Gallons and gallons of water.” (source)

 

Detox Water Benefits


Ok, you get it. We need to drink water.

Now the question is, does drinking detox water benefit us? Any more than drinking plain water?

In my opinion, yes, it does. Here’s my reasoning:

Reason #1

As discussed, infusing your water makes it less boring and more delicious.

Ergo, you drink more water.

If this solution turns a non-water drinker into a water drinker then bam! It has done its job.

Reason #2

Alright… You already drink water.

But you also LOVE soda.

Well you wouldn’t be alone… In fact, water “has become the second most popular drink (behind soft drinks).” (source)

Yikes!!!

According to the Center for Disease Control, “Approximately one-half of the population aged 2 and older consumes sugar drinks on any given day… males consume an average of 178 kcal from sugar drinks on any given day, while females consume 103 kcal.” (source)

Although they may be tasty these drinks are full of sugar! Which is said to be “linked to the U.S. explosion in obesity and related medical problems, and health officials have been urging people to cut back for years.” (source)

My point?

If adding a little fruit/veggies/herbs to your water helps you drink less soda…

…then that’s a huge win in my book!

 

Detox Water Weight Loss


When people ask how detox water helps weight loss, I state the same two points we made above:

Detox water may help you drink more water, and it’s lower in calories than a sugar filled drink.

Now, here’s why these two points help you loose weight:

Increasing your water intake has been associated with weight loss.

As shown by data from the Stanford A TO Z…

“The results of this study suggest that drinking water may promote weight loss for overweight women following weight loss diets. Absolute and relative increases in drinking water were associated with decreases in body weight, waist circumference, and percent body fat in overweight women assigned to four popular weight loss diets” (source).

The study went on to explain that swapping calorically high beverages (such as soda) for water inherently decreases the amount of daily calories consumed, therefore aiding in weight loss.

“For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn’t have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help.” (source)

“My favorite out of all of these detox waters is the Yogis Cocktail, mainly because I’m a freak for cucumber and ginger. These two ingredients are staples in my diet and I add them to almost all food and drinks that I prepare. About this water:

“Once the water infuses for at least 2-3 hours or overnight, I pour off 32 ounces at a time in a glass jar and drink all day between meals. When the water is almost gone in the large jar, I add in 8 more cups of water and a few drops of essential oils like lemon, wild orange, lime, peppermint, ginger or grapefruit and let it infuse again for 2-3 hours. I only use essential oils in my recipes that are food grade and say for dietary use on the bottle. Detox Water Ingredients & Why We Love Them


The possibilities are truly endless when you infuse your own water.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, why don’t you pick some ingredients with detoxifying qualities? Here are some of our favorites and why:

 

Apple

An apple a day keeps the doctor away 🙂

Plus, what’s not to love about them?! High in fiber, convenient and absolutely delicious.

On top of that, apples are “rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that lowers LDL… (the harmful cholesterol-carrying particle that contributes to artery-clogging atherosclerosis).” (source)

 

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

ACV is all the rage, and for good reason!

I personally use apple cider vinegar in most of my salad dressings!

(Not to mention diluted in water as a hair mask and as a toner – but that’s for another article :))

According to Dr. Oz, apple cider vinegar can be used to “combat constipation, since the vinegar stimulates digestive juices that help your body breakdown food.” (source)

It’s also said to aid in weight loss – however – be careful of these claims!

A preliminary study of rats found “that the metabolic disorders caused by high fat diet (cafeteria) are thwarted by taking apple cider vinegar which proves to have a satiating effect, antihyperlipidemic and hypoglycemic effects, and seems prevent the atherogenic risk.” (source)

 

Basil

Have you ever had basil in water?

It’s more refreshing than mint! Well I think so.

According to Dr. Weil, “basil is [a] very good source of vitamin A, magnesium, iron and calcium.” (source)

It’s “been used orally to treat stomach spasms, insect bites, colds, fever and respiratory infections.” (source)

 

Berries (general)

Berries – powerful little super foods that are colorful, summer-y and absolutely delicious.

As a general statement, berries “are anti-inflammatory, a good source of fiber, rich in flavonoids and carotenoids, and offer immune-boosting antioxidant activity.” (source)

Each type of berry has its own health benefits, some listed below!

 

Blueberries

Blueberries add a punch of delicious flavor to whatever you put them in!

Add them to a salad… bake them in your muffins… eat with a handful of nuts.

You wont be disappointed.

And, they’re good for you to! “A half cup of blueberries provides the antioxidant power of five servings of peas, carrots, apples, squash or broccoli.” (source)

 

Cilantro

You either love it or hate it…

Cilantro comes from the coriander plant, which produces cilantro from the leaves and coriander from the seeds (a spice used in traditional Mediterranean foods).

Both of these ingredients have been used by Mediterranean cultures since 5,000 A.D.!

“Cilantro and coriander were preservatives and flavorings in ancient Greek and Roman cultures, and early physicians like Hippocrates used coriander medicinally.” (source)

 

Cinnamon

When I was little, I was obsessed with cinnamon.

One time I ate so much cinnamon I got a rash throughout the inside of my mouth! (Don’t worry, you need to eat quite a bit for this to happen.)

Lucky me, as cinnamon is chalked full of health benefits!

Further research must be conducted, however claims have been made that cinnamon is “an antidiabetic spice.” (source)

These beliefs stem from the fact that “it does possess antihyperglycaemic properties and potential to reduce postprandial blood glucose levels.” (source)

Cinnamon is also toted as an anti inflammatory herb. Again, more research needs to be done, however, this study found cinnamon to reduce muscle soreness.

No wonder cinnamon has been used for centuries in traditional herbs and medicines!

 

Cucumber

Did you know that cucumbers are 95.2% water?! (source)

Ergo, they’re a great hydrator, and are an easy way to make your water taste extra delicious.

According to this research paper “It has potential antidiabetic, lipid lowering and antioxidant activity. Cucumber has a cleansing action within the body by removing accumulated pockets of old waste materials and chemical toxins.”

All these benefits and this veggie is still extremely low in calories!

 

Dandelion Root

Minimal studies have been done on the medicinal properties of dandelion root, however, in the the past it was used…

“to treat liver problems. Native Americans also boiled dandelion in water and took it to treat kidney disease, swelling, skin problems, heartburn, and upset stomach. Ginger is amazing.

Grapes

Grapes are tasty and make for an easy snack between meals.

However, I try to avoid grapes as they’re extremely high in sugar – 1 cup alone contains 23 grams! (Try snacking on berries instead.)

However, “Grapes are rich in health-protecting antioxidants, including resveratrol and flavonoids. These antioxidants are found mainly in the skin, stem, leaf and seeds of grapes, rather than in their pulp.” (source)

 

Grapefruit

This citrus fruit is said to help people loose weight.

“The juice is loaded with vitamin C, which will help you burn fat faster, especially during exercise. In fact, a study showed that people with adequate vitamin C levels burned 30% more fat during moderate exercise than individuals low in vitamin C.” (source)

One study evaluated weight loss in obese patients when given either a placebo, grapefruit juice or grapefruit capsules.

Lavender

Lavender smells nice, looks beautiful and believe it or not can be used in cooking/baking!

Lemon

Lemon is probably the most commonly infused ingredient.

Lime

Lime adds a nice punch of flavor to everything.

In other words, eating lime juice with grains helps your body absorb the nutrients from the grains.

 

Peppermint

Peppermint oil is said to help people with tension headaches (read the study here) and soothe upset stomachs.

Rosemary

Everyone loves the flavor of rosemary!

On top of pasta, baked into crackers… and even if you haven’t tried it yet… infused in your water!

Good thing it’s so tasty because rosemary “contains compounds that have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Fresh rosemary is a good source of iron, while dried rosemary is a good source of calcium and fiber.” (source)

 

Strawberries

Strawberries are another one of the healthiest and tastiest ingredients to infuse because they’re:

Turmeric

Turmeric is a close relative to ginger.

However, it tastes completely different! (and not in a bad way)

Detox water is a great way to incorporate more water to your daily regime.
