Ingredients for Quick Pickled Onions
These quick pickled red onions are easy to make with just a few kitchen staples. Seriously, you’ll be shocked at the amount of flavor you’ll get from ingredients you probably have waiting in your pantry.
- Red onions are my favorite to pickle because they’re so darn beautiful. You can also pickle white or yellow onions using the same method shared below.
- White vinegar is my preferred vinegar when pickling veggies, as it has a neutral flavor and tends to make veggies more tangy.
- Sugar will sweeten things up.
- Salt, be sure to use kosher salt, for the correct ratios.
How to Make Quick Pickled Red Onions
Not only do these quick pickled onions come together with just a few ingredients, but they’re also crazy easy to make. Here’s how:
- Bring all ingredients (except the onions) to a simmer in a small saucepan.
- Pour over the onions. The onions will soften as they sit in the liquid, so continue to move them around until they’re all covered in liquid.
How to Use Pickled Onions
These quick pickled onions taste incredible on everything. Seriously, everything. We absolutely love to…
- Top flank steak, grilled shrimp, or broiled salmon with them.
- Or a burger, turkey burger, or grilled chicken sandwich.
- Use them for tacos, burritos, or taco bowls.
- If you’re making poke bowls, they’re a must. Check out my shrimp poke bowls.

- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 red onion thinly sliced
Instructions
- Place white vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer. Stir until the sugar and salt completely dissolve into the liquid.
- Meanwhile place onion slices in a large jar or bowl. Pour the hot liquid over the slices, and make sure the onion is completely covered in liquid. Let the onion rest this way for at least 30 minutes, however the flavor will continue to improve the longer it is in the pickling liquid.
