How to Make Protein Powder Pancakes
Making protein powder pancakes can be as simple or as fancy as you’d like…
You can make protein pancakes without baking powder, heck… you really only need 3 ingredients for protein powder pancakes success: your favorite protein powder, your choice of low carb milks, and an egg.
The problem with the 3-ingredient protein pancakes mentioned above is that they lack the “fluff” we crave from a solid pancake recipe. So, toss a little baking powder with salt (these work together as a leavening agent), and all will be wonderful again.
Here are some other tips for protein powder pancake perfection:
1. Your Protein Pancakes Are Only As Good As Your Protein Powder
I can’t stress this enough, if your protein powder tastes nasty, your protein pancakes will taste nasty! This is the most important thing to consider when making protein powder pancakes you’ll actually enjoy.
There are SO many low carb protein powder options to choose from — some are full of chemicals (which affects the taste) with varying sweeteners and added flavors.
But the most important difference in taste is plant-based protein powder vs. whey. Whey typically has a subtle flavor, while plant based protein powders vary depending on the plant sources used in each product.
I steer very clear of pea protein powders — if you’ve tried them you know what I’m talking about! However, my favorite plant protein powder contains some pea protein (combined with others to hide the nasty flavor).
Try a sample before you buy any protein powder and you should be good to go!
2. This Low Carb Pancake Mix Is Best With Vanilla
I know other flavors are tempting, but I find this low carb pancake mix is best made with vanilla protein powder— all the artificial flavors added to certain protein powders can affect the taste of your protein powder pancakes, and not in a good way!
You may be able to get away with chocolate protein powder pancakes without the artificial flavor kicking in too much — but, vanilla is most similar to traditional pancakes, so I’d stick with that!
3. Mixing Your Low Carb Pancakes
The easiest way to mix your low carb pancakes is in a blender, as the peanut butter is hard to incorporate otherwise.
If you’d like to skip the blender, try softening the peanut butter in a microwave and combining your protein powder pancakes no banana together in a bowl with an electric mixer.
4. Frying Your No Carb Pancakes
This step can make or break your no carb pancakes; burnt protein powder pancakes aren’t good, but cooking them in burnt butter is even worse!
To prevent this, I add a slice of butter to a nonstick skillet (although griddles are the best surface to cook pancakes on) over medium heat, then pour in the batter. Between protein powder pancake pours, I carefully wipe the skillet with a paper towel to remove the old butter, and add a new slice.
If you’d like to add some fresh berries into the mix, sprinkle them on before flipping the protein powder pancakes!
Keto Pancakes Variations
If some of these keto pancakes ingredients aren’t calling your name, here are some swaps to consider:
- Milk: You can add heavy cream instead if that works better with you macro goals.
- Protein Powder: Swap for ¼ cup almond flour or peanut flour for protein pancakes without protein powder — you’ll want to cut the milk in half as well.
- Butter: fry your protein powder pancakes keto style by using whatever mild oil or ghee you’d prefer.
Can You Turn These Into Low Carb Cream Cheese Pancakes?
Totally! Simply swap the peanut butter for cream cheese, and you’ve got creamy and delicious low carb cream cheese pancakes.

When it comes to topping these pancakes, you can as creative as you’d like! Some of my favorite toppings are:

More Gluten Free Pancakes
Instead of topping your gluten free pancakes with the ingredients above, try stirring them into your batter (except the syrups and whipped cream), and frying them all together in the pan. Who doesn’t love blueberry or chocolate chip protein powder pancakes?
Protein Powder Pancakes Recipe
Without further ado, I’ll let you get cooking your new favorite low carb breakfast creation: protein powder pancakes!

- Place all ingredients (except butter) in a blender. I find it’s easiest to put the eggs, peanut butter and milk in before the dry ingredients.
- Blend to combine ingredients. You may need to stop the blender and clean the edges/blade to thoroughly combine everything.
- Heat a large nonstick skillet to medium heat and melt a thin layer of butter in the pan.
- Pour the batter in the center of your pan. I do this one pancake at a time to get clean circles! If you don’t care about that, pour as many as you can fit and flip easily.
- Cook until your pancake can flip easily, about 3-4 minutes.
- Flip and cook the other side for about 2 minutes. You’ll know your pancakes are done when they’re golden brown and cooked through.
- Place on a plate and while you continue cooking the rest of the batter.
- Serve warm, top liberally, and enjoy!
- Serving size is for 1 pancake, 1/12 of the pancake batter.
