Homemade Larabar Recipe

We all have those mornings.

One too many glasses of wine (or episodes of American Horror Story) the night before leading to an extra snooze of the alarm.

Being late to work is just not an option, so we sacrifice breakfast to get out the door on time…

We’re exhausted all day, because missing breakfast is never a good idea.

And every time this happens we promise to never let it happen again!

Well… what if I were to tell you I have a yummy, healthy, homemade solution!

Thanks to this Homemade Larabar Recipe, we’ll never have to skip the most important meal of the day again! And you’ll automatically get to sleep an extra 20 minutes.

A grab and go breakfast. Genius. Why haven’t we been making these our whole lives?!

Yes, I know. You can easily buy a Larabar at the store on your way to work. But why would you once you discover how easily you can make them at home?

Not to mention, the money you will save 🙂

Although, as much as I love an easy recipe and saving money, these aren’t the main motivators driving me to make Larabars at home…

Homemade Larabars| The Little Pine

I make Larabars for one reason and one reason only. These bars are completely customizable. Meaning, I can add whatever nut, spice or crazy ingredient I’m craving that day! (once you get the base recipe down).

So I’m no longer stuck with the only bars left at my picked over grocery store! (It’s always the cherry pie bars – sorry if you like this flavor but yuck!)

And I get to be creative! I mean would you judge me if I added cocoa powder and orange peel to everything? Ok phew… thanks for the reassurance.

Heck, if you want to add garlic salt to your bars you can! (although we hope you don’t!)

I make Larabars with leftover almond pulp (accumulated as the bi-product from making almond milk). This has changed my life, because the thought of wasting even a crumb of this precious almond pulp is just not an option for me!

Thanks to this recipe, not only is the almond pulp not thrown away, it’s an eseesntial ingredient in my daily breakfast!

I typically make a rather large batch and throw the bars into the freezer. This makes for the perfect grab-and-go snack when you’re in a pinch!

I find the easiest way to do this is to cut the bars to desired size and coat them in cocoa powder. This helps keep the bars from sticking together.

But there’s one thing to watch out for when making Larabars.

It’s an easy recipe, in that you literally toss all the ingredients into the blender and let the blender work its magic by grinding them down and combining them.

However, you will more than likely find that these ingredients are hard to blend together, as the dates seem to stick to the blender and don’t want to break down. It’s a total pain.

I recommend a high powered blender such as a Blendtec or Vitamix, although even with these blenders it can be difficult.

I’ve found that adding a little water to the blender helps these ingredients combine more smoothly. Liquid thins the mix which allows the blades to spin freely.

Other then that this recipe is super simple and can be modified however you like!

Recipe Tip! Are you having trouble breaking down the dates in your high speed blender?

I was too… you’re not alone.

And the solution in embarrassingly easy. All you have to do is soak the dates for a minute or so in warm water. This makes them much easier to blend and combine the ingredients!


Recipe Modifications:

If you’re looking to use this recipe as a base for your own, unique homemade larabars, keep in mind the consistency will change.

Try to keep the date to nut ratio relatively similar to the recipe. Let us know in the comments below what you tried!

Homemade Larabar Recipe

  • 1 Cup [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/almonds”]Almonds[/url]
  • 1 1/3 Cups [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/dates”]Dates – Pitted[/url]
  • 1 Tsp [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/vanilla-extract”]Vanilla Extract[/url]
  • 3-4 Tbl [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/cocoa-powder”]Cocoa Powder[/url]
  • 2 Tbl Water
  • Optional: 1/8 Tsp [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/sea-salt”]Salt[/url] (I always add it!)
  1. Add all ingredients to [url href=”https://www.thelittlepine.com/go/blendtec-classic”]blender[/url] and blend until combined (if ingredients are not blending, or are sticking too much to the blender you can add another Tablespoon of water) – sometimes I chop the dates before adding to the blender to help them combine more easily!
  2. Line a pyrex pan with wax paper
  3. Press the combination into a the pan so there is a thin and even layer
  4. Place the pan in the freezer for 1hr
  5. After 1hr, pull the pan out of the freezer and pull the wax paper out
  6. Cut the bars to desired size, and enjoy!
