Few things set the mood better than the radiance of a fire, the flicker of a candle, or the warm glow of a Himalayan salt lamp.
These powerful lamps emanate a soothing glow, and are a beautiful piece to incorporate into your home.
Question is, are they really the panacea some say they are?
Assertions have been made that Himalayan salt lamp benefits range from cleansing the air to increases serotonin levels…
…And as great as all that sounds (trust me, I wish I could switch on a light to fix all my issues) there’s little to no scientific evidence backing these statements.
In this article, we’ll share what’s really up with Himalayan salt lamps. What to expect from using them, and debunking the false claims so you know the truth.
Himalayan Salt Lamp Benefits
To understand why people have made such extravagant statements about Himalayan salt lamp benefits, we need to take a step back to learn what Himalayan salt lamps are and how they came to be.
As the name would imply, Himalayan salt lamps are large rock crystals of salt mined from (you guess it) the Himalayas.
They’re lit from within by a bulb or candle, which gives out a warm orange, pink and ultra soothing glow (source).
Although I was unable to find any evidence for this, some claim this salt dates back to Earth’s creation, and is composed of dried remnants from the original Primal Sea (source).
The reason some credit these lamps with being a “cure all” is based on the theory that they release negative ions, which combat the positive ions we’re constantly surrounded by with current day electronics.
They believe said negative ions deliver a handful of healing properties.
In fact, according to some retailers, negative ions supposedly “bring oxygen to the brain, reduce indoor pollution, boost the immune system and cure seasonal affective disorder (SAD)” (source).
Genius marketing strategy, right? The second I read that I threw about 50 of them in my Amazon cart for presents.
Now the question is, do these lamps release negative ions? If so, what effect do these ions have on us?
Himalayan Salt Lamp Benefits Research
As you’d assume, it’s hard to gather research on the effects of a lamp, which is why Himalayan salt lamp benefits research has been minimal.
However, research has been done on negative ions.
Negative ions “are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments” (source).

Such as waterfalls, the ocean, or mountains.
According to Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research, once these ions hit our bloodstream they increase the flow of oxygen to our brains, resulting in reduced drowsiness and increased metal energy (source).
You tell me… do you feel a burst of happiness in specific environments? I sure do, the mountains are my happy place 🙂
Positive ions are said to have the opposite effect. They’re produced by electronics and may create anxiety and stress (source).
As far as research goes…
A few small studies have correlated negative ionization and people in specific circumstances, such as:
- This study, which used a natural dawn simulator and negative air ionization to measure its effect on seasonal affective disorder. It found:
“Naturalistic dawn simulation and high-density ionization are active antidepressants that do not require the effort of postawakening bright light therapy. They can be considered candidate alternatives to bright light or medication.” (source)
- An additional study observed people conducting computer operations and the effect negative air ions had on their anxiety and salivary chromogranin A-like immunoreactivity.
“Task performance was slightly but significantly improved by the presence of negative air ions. These results suggest that negative air ions are effective for the reduction of and the prompt recovery from stress caused by computer operation.” (source)
- Last but not least, this study examined the effect bright light therapy and negative air ions had on chronic depression. It found that…
“Both bright light and negative air ions are effective for treatment of chronic depression.” (source)
In all my research I was unable to find evidence that Himalayan Salt Lamps emit negative ions.
Or, that the light resignation from salt lamps is enough “bright light” to be effective for light therapy. Both of which were used to achieve the positive results in the studies above.
Himalayan Salt Lamp Benefits Dr. Oz
No, Dr. Oz didn’t speak specifically about Himalayan salt lamp benefits.
However, on this Dr. Oz show, he discussed a less popular product called a Himalayan crystal salt inhaler.
I have yet to try it, but it’s definitely sparked my interest! He claims this inexpensive inhaler may help with allergies, sinus infections and breathing difficulties (source).

Do Himalayan Salt Lamp Really Work?
Now that you know the research, the question still remains: do Himalayan salt lamps really work?
Which prompts my question, work towards what?
As you you’ve read, there’s no scientific evidence supporting the notion that these lamps are a remedy for any ailment.
That being said, here are a few reasons why I think these lamps work/rock (pun intended):
1. Makes for the perfect night light.
When you’re sleepy, but trying to finish up a few things, the last thing you need is a bright light beaming on your face to wake you up.
They’re great to keep in your bathroom or kitchen as a light to guide your way, instead of turning on the beaming overhead.
Himalayan salt lamps radiate a soothing glow to help maintain and/or achieve relaxation mode.
Their orange-ish hue beams similarly to a flickering candle. Come one now, what could be more peaceful than that?
Let’s face it, these lamps are pretty darn cute.
And with their inexpensive price tag, peaceful vibe and potential benefits, why not toss a few in your house to see if you notice any difference?
- Soothing Sinuses & Allergies.
I consider Dr. Oz to be a very credible source, so if he believes the Himalayan crystal salt inhaler may soothe allergies, sinus infections and breathing difficulties (source) then I think it deserves a try.
