Think of the hair in shampoo commercials. But on your own head.

19 Best Sulfate Free Shampoos

We all want those long, shiny, silky smooth locks of hair being flaunted around in every hair commercial.

But let’s face it. Not all of us are were bequeathed Farrah Fawcett‘s mane, or our younger years were spent at a salon bleaching our hair into a crispy oblivion.

Don’t fret. There’s hope for us.

Everyone wants to get that glow, and I’ve literally read a hundred different ways people suggest to do so…

…Starting with a mashed avocado in your hair and ending with an overpriced clay rinse from a stylist.

So, before you go get cray with these potential solutions, why not try something a little simpler. Something some people swear works for them.

Swapping to a sulfate free shampoo. That simple.

In this article, I’ll share all the nitty gritty on sulfates, put to rest some of those nasty rumors you’ve heard, and let you know some options for the best sulfate free shampoos.

Use this table of contents to quickly browse through the article:

What Are Sulfates?

Sulfates, more specifically Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS), are surfactants (a compound that reduces surface tension – therefore increasing a liquids ability to spread) found in 90% of foaming products (source).

In other words, SLS helps to clean your skin/hair/whatever you’re applying it to by removing dirt and debris and forming a foamy lather.

It’s most commonly derived from coconut or palm oil, both of which are extremely high is lauryl acid, then processed with petroleum (source).

You heard that right – it’s a natural compound combined with another natural compound – what could possibly be so bad about that?

Why Some People Avoid Sulfates

Now the issue some people have with SLS is that it irritates their skin or dries out their hair.

Which is why people with drier or color treated hair may benefit from using sulfate free shampoos, as the shampoo can dry their hair even more. On the contrary, people with oily hair may in fact benefit from using shampoos that contain sulfates.

For the folks with oily hair, you may need the sulfates to feel like your hair is truly clean.

That being said, all the hysterical claims being made about sulfate products are in fact misleading and nonfactual.

The Truth About Sulfates…

…is that those nasty rumors that demonize these chemical compounds as being a threat to human health have no scientific evidence to back them.

This study evaluated the toxicity levels of SLS as an eye and skin irritant.

It found that when formulated properly and sufficient irritancy testing was completed by manufactures, it doesn’t introduce an unnecessary risk.

The most notable difference about a sulfate free shampoo is…

Because sulfates are largely responsible for the foam we love scrubbing into our hair, most sulfate free shampoos don’t have the same effect.

That being said, if you love the suds, you’re going to miss the sulfates.

My suggestion if you’re interested in introducing sulfate free shampoos into your life…

… is to try them! See how the formula works with your hair type. If you like the results, then stick with it! If not switch back.

Either way, let us know your thoughts in the comments below 🙂
