The 13 Best Meal Prep Containers

It’s a fact: Sunday is the best day of the week.

It’s a day completely centered around football, church, and/or meal prepping; but since you’re here, I’m guessing you’re thinking about food.

Whether you’re driven by a desire to save some cash, shed a few pounds, or avoid your coworkers at lunch… meal prepping is serious business.

Done properly, you’ll be stoked. No one’s lunch game has anything on you.

Done wrong? You’re that coworker who’s wobbly container leaked all over the fridge and stunk it up for weeks to come.

So instead of venturing out for another $15 grease bomb, I say we solve the core issue… Your container situation.

Let’s get a container worthy of the meal prep you work so hard to perfect.

Below we’ve listed the top 13 meal prep containers, plus some food for thought (pun intended) on picking the right container just for you.

The Best Meal Prep Container

For my personal needs, the best meal prep container is the Premium Glass Meal Prep Containers by Meal Prep.

Here’s why…

I prefer using glass meal prep containers over plastic and stainless steel, and as far as glass containers go, these are the most cost effective option.

These containers only have one compartment. They’re ridiculously durable, easy to clean, oven safe, microwave safe, dishwasher safe – like I said they check all my boxes.

How to Pick the Right Meal Prep Container for You

I warned you, meal prepping is serious business.

Which is why I’m here to guide you. I’ve impulsively purchased one too many meal prep containers (some awesome, some terrible), therefore I’m sufficiently qualified to write this article and help you out!

The list below contains features I wish I’d thought of before making my first few purchases.

Size

May seem obvious, but it’s good to consider before making a purchase.

How much food do you typically eat for lunch? You don’t want to buy a small sized container if you’re a big eater and vice versa.

Compartments

Again, another potentially obvious point, but it’s worth discussing.

What kind of meals do you typically prep? Do you like a little dessert or a side with your meal? If so, compartments will be important to you.

Leak Proof

This is important. I don’t even want to get into how many times my lunch leaked throughout my purse on the way to work.

Look for something you can hold upside down or spin around without leaking. Even if you don’t think this is immediately important, I guarantee you won’t regret this feature.

Material

You can choose from glass, stainless steel or plastic. There are pros and cons to each material.

I prefer glass containers. It seals in the smell, is easy to clean, and you can typically reheat directly out of the container (most glass containers are advertised as oven safe, major bonus points for this!). However, glass has its faults. It is heavier and more fragile than plastic or steel.

Stainless steel is newish in the meal prep container world, so there aren’t as many options and it’s much more expensive. It’s light (like plastic) and is perfect to toss into a hiking pack. I have a few stainless steel containers and absolutely love them. I find stainless steel works best with salads and sandwiches… foods that don’t need to be reheated.

Plastic is the less expensive choice. The containers are durable, easy to stack when empty and are extremely light. If you purchase plastic containers make sure you find some that are BPA free (all the plastic containers on this list are).

Microwaveable

If you plan to freeze your meals, or prefer warm meals (like me!) this is important.

Always check the labels to ensure the container you purchase is microwave safe. Like I said above, some glass containers are oven safe as well!

Freezable

If you are looking to freeze your meals, check the seal, if it’s leak proof it’s more than likely freezer compatible. You don’t want your delicious meal getting freezer burn!

Meal Prep Container Reviews : Plastic

The easiest, most cost effective way to enter the meal prep container market is by using plastic containers.

Plastic is durable, inexpensive, lightweight, stackable, and easy to clean.

Here are a few of the most popular options:

1. Fitpacker Meal Prep Containers

by Fitpacker

Size: 28oz
Compartments: One
Stackable: Yes

Microwaveable: Yes (not lid)
Freezer: Yes
Dishwasher: Yes
Price: $ on Amazon…

These are excellent containers to help you get started on your meal prepping journey. Lightweight, versatile, and inexpensive what more could you ask for?

I recommend starting with a pack like this to make sure meal prepping isn’t just a soon to be forgotten New Years Resolution. If you stay committed (which I hope you will!) invest in something more durable, such as the glass options below.

2. Lift Meal Prep Containers

by LIFT

Have I ever told you how much I love compartments?? And these containers, these containers have got three individual compartments. Me, oh my!

That’s one for a main course, one for some veggies, and one for a little something sinful… what more could you ask for?!

4. 15-Pack Bento Lunch Boxes

by Freshware

Size: 25oz
Compartments: Two
Stackable: Yes
Material: Plastic BPA free
Microwaveable: Yes (not lid)
Freezer: Yes

Price: $ on Amazon…

I had to add another container with compartments to the list because I love compartments THAT much. Here we’ve got two sections. Big one is for dessert and the small one is for protein (or is it the other way around).

Either way, with an option like this there’s no need to carry around multiple containers for all your goodies. At the same time, there’s no cross contamination of your individually contained concoctions! It’s the best of both worlds.

Meal Prep Container Reviews : Glass

Glass is definitely my favorite meal prep container option.

It’s easy to clean and heat up, plus it doesn’t don’t crack as easily as plastic… If you don’t plan on slamming your containers into the ground, they’ll last a REALLY long time.

I stumbled on the beauty of these glass container when I was in college. I wanted to save a few bucks by not paying for a bunch of individual pans and food storage containers.

I bought a package of Pyrex dishes and roasted my veggies in the same glass pyrex I’d later store them in! That being said, glass meal prep containers could ultimately save you a few bucks if this is something you’re interested.

These Snapware containers are my meal prepping go-to. I have them in the smaller size (24oz.) which is the perfect size for the smaller portions I tend to eat. The size shown above is their 32oz container, which is more common.

At lunchtime I usually pop mine in the toaster oven to heat it up, because yes, I am one of those weirdos who tries to avoid the microwave.

Meal Prep Container Reviews : Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is an awesome container option.

Meal Prep Container Reviews : Other

This section is for all your non-traditional meal prep container needs.

Some of these options are for snacks, parsing out smoothie fixings, or day of sandwich bags. Either way, they’re useful to have around the house!

One of my favorite healthy eating tips: At the beginning of each week, I typically portion out various high protein snacks I can grab and eat when I’m feeling famished. These snacks include nuts + dried fruit, almond butter, hard boiled eggs, and hummus + veggies.

I empty out my cheese drawer and fill it with these goodies. Then I can grab a few when hungry instead of spending a ton of time trying to scrounge something up! I’ve found the reusable bags below to be awesome for portioning out these mini meals.

11. Wide Mouth Quart Jars

by Ball

Size: 32oz
Compartments: One
Stackable: Yes
Material: Glass + Metal Lid
Microwaveable: Yes (not lid)
Freezer: Yes
Dishwasher: Yes
Price: $ on Amazon…

My meal prepping journey started with mason jars. They’re the perfect vessel for salads, soups, or a stir fry!

I love adding layers of roasted veggies and quinoa to a tall wide mouthed mason jar, then topping it off with fresh salad. When I’m ready to eat I pour in a little dressing, return the lid and shake away.

12. Stasher Reusable Silicone Food Bag

by Stasher

Size: 7.5″ x 7″ x 1″
Compartments: One
Stackable: Yes
Material: Silicone
Microwaveable: Yes
Freezer: Yes
Dishwasher: Yes
Price: $ on Amazon…

Resealable bags are the perfect way to pack snacks and sandwiches for the road.

These bags are pretty awesome. They’re a great way to protect your food from freezer burn, can be rinsed in the dishwasher and are completely plastic free!

13. Snack Time rePETe

by ChicoBag

Size: 6.5” x 5.5”
Compartments: One
Stackable: NA
Material: Fabric (100% Recycled PET made with Repreve, Liner: Free of BPA)
Microwaveable: No
Freezer: No
Machinewash: Yes
Price: @ on Amazon…

I absolutely love these bags. I may be a tad biased because I went to Chico State, and watched Chico Bags grow from a small local company to a huge one, but their products truly are amazing!

These are perfect snack pack size, and can be washed in your washing machine!

In Conclusion…

In my opinion, if you’re investing time and energy into your meal prep, then you deserve good quality containers.

That being said, I hope this articles helps you to find a meal prep container that’s more suitable to your meal time needs than that old cottage cheese container!

Stay tuned over the next few weeks for some delicious meal planning!
